WBKA celebrates their 100th member.

100th member joins the Westport Beekeepers Association.

As Clare Island comes into view from the top of Sheehaun on the Westport Castlebar road (N5), Dermott questioned: “Is this the fourth or fifth van load of bees that has come over this hill this year?” That question I could not answers instantly! as my thoughts was with the awaiting 100th new member of our Westport Beekeepers club.

I attended a meeting in the Teagasc Centre, after seeing an article in the local parish newsletter in October 2009. Little did anybody think then that the club would be 100 members strong by the summer of 2011 less than two years later!

A gathering of members awaited the fifth arrival of bees at the usual distribution point, the Teagasc Centre on the Newport Road, including our centurion member, local Dentist, John Campbell.

As the nucs dwindled from the back of the van, John was offered advice from all-round, about how to get his bees to make honey! Following some pictures and good wishes from the group we set off.

With a view of the ocean, we packed the newbie’s into his awaiting pre-prepared hive and headed off into the sunset and left the bees to become familiar with their surroundings.
