WBKA Monthly Meeting 05/06/18

03/06/2018

On the night we have Brian Ambrey of the Sligo-Leitrim Beekeepers Association who will give a talk about Queen rearing, so come along! you may pick up a few tip’s as regards how to get a few extra nuc’s to make up for the over winter losses. What a change we have had in the weather.

From one of the longest winters to one of the finest late springs. Everything seems to have started late and many hives perished while awaiting for finer weather. We finally have that break. And hives are thriving in it. Stories abound of hives honey bound and of supers filling up. We have already seen white clover and blackberry in bloom so we could be in for a very fast summer. Keep an eye out for a June gap and keep an eye on space in those hives. They seem to be intent on crowding themselves with pollen and nectar.

Congratulations to everyone who completed their beginners course this year. We had 27 sit the course and 17 sit the exam. The enthusiasm was palpable and the level of competency displayed at the hives was a joy to behold. Hopefully we shall have some of those beginners take up the mantel of beekeeper.

The June meeting is our last until after the summer but we will continue to attend the apiarys weekly on Tuesday evenings at 7.00pm. If you have any questions about your bees this is a good time to raise them.

Hope to see you all at the meeting.
