Apiary Practice

01/05/2012

As at 2.00pm today Friday we have decided to facilitate anybody who is available to come to the apiary this evening at 5.00pm sharp for an hive inspection.

See website : http://www.met.ie/sat/iuk-v.asp

Greetings,

On advice of the experts at beekeeping, disturbing the brood box in cold weather (e.g. below 12deg) for any period of time will definitely result in chilled brood. Today’s temperature is promised not to get up to this level so hopefully tomorrow Saturday we will get a quick look into some hives as the temperatures are promised around 12deg. Check Met Éireann website: http://www.met.ie/forecasts/regional.asp?Prov=Connacht (or my weather app above for local temp)

Contact Dermot with your mobile number if you are available at short notice to go to the apiary, as those of us who are looking after apiary duties daily may find that the temperatures locally (a temperature gauge on site) is OK to open some of the unopened hives todate for inspection, you will benefit from the experience!

Check back again for more details closer to time.

For the Beginners who are doing the exam there are visits to the Apiary this week coming up on WEATHER PERMITTING.

During our May meeting members saw first hand a honey bee stinger and witnessed how to extract it, with advice on what to use to reduce swelling and pain!
