‘Practical Lesson’ A large number of beginners turned up in the apiary to hear Philip McCabe, European President of Apimondia, (Beekeeping Health) and PRO of the Federation Of Irish Beekeepers Association describe what he finds as he progressed through a hive at a snail pace for the benefit of our new learners. there was awe on everyone face when Dermot announced that it was 5.00pm and the show was over. A large crowd is expected due to the increased interest in the honey bee and their welfare.

Philip a well known beekeeper from Co Monaghan is the current PRO of the Federation of Irish Beekeepers Associations, he is often heard on Derek Mooney’s show “Mooney Goes Live” on RTE radio 1. He also features on TV programs with his beekeeping. This talk is aimed at non beekeepers and anyone attending will be amazed by all the virtues and uses of Irish Honey and also have the pleasure of listening to one of the best speakers on this subject, he is also a great storyteller.

Philip is also doing a demonstration in the Westport Beekeepers apiary on Saturday evening at 3pm weather permitting; we are meeting at the Teagasc offices on Newport Road at 2.30pm and if weather is inclement Philip will give a lecture in the Teagasc centre.

Well done to everybody who came to the Teagasc Centre, Westport, last weekend 31 March / 1 April to attend the beginner’s course classes in preparation for – ‘The preliminary exam’ which will take place on Saturday the 19th of May 2012.
THE FEDERATION OF IRISH BEEKEEPERS ASSOCATION WILL SEND AN EXAMINER TO WESTPORT IF THERE ARE 10 CANDITATES OR MORE SITTING THE EXAM.
THE COST OF THE EXAM IS €20.00 – WHICH ASSISTS WITH THE EXPENSES.
An application form (Provincial Exam Entry Form) can be downloaded from the navigation panel on the right hand side of the Federation of Irish Beekeepers Associations website. Or click here for a download page.
Print it off and complete all your details, you must submit it to Henry Horkan who is the co-coordinator for the exam, together with €20.00 before 15th of April as the deadline for applications to the Federation is the 20thof April.
However late entries will be accepted up to one week after the closing date on payment of a late entry fee which is twice the original entry fee.

The Westport Beekeepers Association’s committee urges everyone who attended the course to sit the exam because this is an easy exam to pass.
If you are a candidate reading this! please do this today because the last day for getting your name to the Federation is the 20th of APRIL for the exam.
Please note: We will be going to the Apiary as soon as the weather improves to show everybody who is on the course what is required for the practical section of the exam and what you will have to do for your own hive!

“Making Splits and Increasing Stocks”
Presented by: “Tom Prendergast” Tipperary.
Tom is another of Ireland’s best beekeepers keeping 100 hives since he was very young in a number of Apiaries throughout Tipperary. He is meticulous in his approach to beekeeping, maintaining all his hives in a healthy manner. He is much sought after to give lectures all over the country, including at Gormanstown. He also runs his associations Apiary.
Beekeepers from the Westport Association came together at the Tagasc Centre in Westport, to listen to three lectures from the Federation of the Irish Beekeepers Association, Mary, Gerry and Jim Ryan from Tipperary and members of the South Tipp Beekeepers Association, give packed lectures from 9 – 5.30pm Saturday and Sunday about bees and beekeeping.
